Years ago when I was first starting my fly collection(before I was part of RoundRocks), I bought a 300 Fly mix from RoundRocks to help bulk up my collection. I have used and replaced many of those flies, I have also gotten rid of some of those flies and some of them I still have. I do think of my flies as a collection that is always growing and now that I tie flies I don’t think I could ever fish them all.
My collection aside most fly fishermen have a few flies they like and that work well for them so that is all they use, because I have to try new patterns that I bring in all the time and because I am always tying new patterns myself, I rarely use the same fly for very long. I can use this many flies successfully because fish are opportunistic feeders, if it looks like food they will probably try it. Also the bugs that are in rivers, are in most rivers. Weather you fish in Logan, Provo or New York you will find mayflies, caddis, midges, stoneflies and others. They get bigger when its warm and smaller when its cold and they try to match the color of what is around them. In the spring when its green you find more green bugs in summer as the grass turns tan you find more tan bugs and in the winter they are black or white. In dark conditions use dark flies in light conditions use light flies. Also a bright attracter fly or hot spot can increase your strike rate, it will bring the fish close and if you trail it with a smaller more natural fly they will usually take the natural fly if the bright one didn’t look ok to eat.
With that in mind the 100 fly kit is a great way to get a lot of flies cheap. We change our patterns every year and the last of a pattern we are changing, go into the kits . You don’t get to choose but we only change them in order to have something new, so the flies are still great flies and you are getting them at our cost, what more could you ask.
In short the 100 fly kit is a great deal, you may not use them all but you can never have to many options when you are standing on the river wonder what to use and in the end the only thing that matters is that you enjoy yourself so if having flies to cast to fish makes you happy how can you go wrong.
